This year's Special Olympics Essex County Regional Games are in
the books. Here a recap of the event along with notable results.
Essex County Special Olympics Regional Games
Saturday, May 12, 2001
Bishop Fenwick High School
The competition was light at this year's regionals. The Danvers Kiwanis
team was well represented along with Lynn and Peabody making up the "Essex
County Big Three".
The lack of athletes at this year's event allowed individual races and
teammates competing against one another. This made for some great races
between the Danvers Kiwanis team.
Athletes Breakdown :
Chris "Catastrophe" Andersen : Chris won a gold medal in the
50 meter dash upsetting teammate Corey O'Keefe. Chris was a 1st Squad member
of the Kiwanis Relay.
"Dangerous" Dana Mathason : Dana kept his 50 meter gold streak
alive by edging rookie, Jay Robinson. Dana was also the lead in a great
relay heat.
Corey "Hardcore" O'Keefe : Corey has suffered through a tough
winter of practice, having battles with coughing and asthma-like conditions.
However, He put forth a great effort and enjoyed himself thoughrly at this
year's event. Corey won a silver medal in the 50 meter dash heat with Chris
Andersen.
Rusty Walker : Rusty was part of last year's 4 for 4 50 meter
dash preformance by the Kiwanis team. He continued his winning ways this
year with another gold medal.
Jay Robinson : This rookie was involved in a close 50 meter dash
heat with teammate Dana Mathason. Jay came home with a silver medal. His
effort and sportsmanship has made for a great addition to the Kiwanis team.
Peter Conrad : The always fast Conrad scored another gold in
his 50 meter dash heat.
From here, the athletes will take a month off and then practice for
the 2001 Massachusetts State games. Good Luck to all and thanks to the
athletes for giving it your all for sportsWIRE!!!
